As a digital strategist working in online behaviour change, Shannon’s passions lie at the intersections of technological innovation and tackling social disparities within modern-day communities. Her interests led her to the MPhil in Inclusive Innovation to explore and better understand the fields of digital democracy (or e-governance), with a particular focus on creating tools and platforms that help people in marginalised communities better mobilise and advocate for themselves.
Joining the Bertha Centre has shown Shannon that there is space for her ideas around bringing about social and economic justice in South Africa and that there are others who believe in them. She appreciates being exposed to different knowledge systems, schools of thought, and an environment where knowledge sharing and robust discourse and debate takes place.
Being awarded the Bertha Centre Scholarship has given Shannon the opportunity to fully invest herself and her resources into the social impact space, and allowed her the confidence to bring innovative and disruptive ideas to the table.
